Defining Two-Sided Markets
We propose a general definition of “two-sided markets,” identify the conditions under which a market is indeed two-sided, and, finally, discuss why two-sidedness matters for business and public policies.
متن کاملUncoordinated Two-Sided Markets∗
Various economic interactions can be modeled as two-sided markets. A central solution concept to these markets are stable matchings, introduced by Gale and Shapley. It is well known that stable matchings can be computed in polynomial time, but many real-life markets lack a central authority to match agents. In those markets, matchings are formed by actions of self-interested agents. Knuth intro...
متن کاملOne-sided Logic in Two-sided Markets
In this paper, I consider eight basic fallacies that can arise from using conventional wisdom from one-sided markets in two-sided market settings. These fallacies are illustrated using statements made in the context of regulatory investigations into credit card schemes in Australia and the United Kingdom. I discuss how these fallacies may be reconciled by proper use of a two-sided market analys...
متن کاملCompetition in two-sided markets with common network externalities
We study competition in two sided markets with common network externality rather than with the standard inter-group e¤ects. This type of externality occurs when both groups bene t, possibly with di¤erent intensities, from an increase in the size of one group and from a decrease in the size of the other. We explain why common externality is relevant for the health and education sectors. We focus...
متن کاملPrice Competition in Two-Sided Markets with Heterogeneous Consumers and Network Effects∗
In most models of two-sided markets, demand on one market side depends on the numbers of consumers on the other market side, but not on their composition. We document that prices for advertisements in daily newspapers do not only depend on the number of readers, but also on their location, gender and wealth. Motivated by this, we propose a model of a two-sided market with heterogeneous consumer...
